What Causes Delayed Periods?

Posted on Thu, 10 Sep 2015
Question: Hello Dr!,

Myself XXXX, female, age 23, have a question, kindly please clarify.

My last period was on XXXXXXX 12/2015, had physical foreplay with my BF on XXXXXXX 28th, no penetration, it was surface level even with no direct contact to either's sex organs.
Periods regular usually with delay of 5-10 days now and then....
Now till today i.e., 17/Aug/2015 I have no periods. Started to have tonic " mensta" an auyurvedic medicine(http://www.dabur.com/Products-Ayurvedic%20Specialities-Mensta).
Tested myself with pregnancy test kit on Aug 10, it was negative, again tested on Aug 11 also negative result, test was done on around between 10-11.30 am (test was either done with 2-3rd urine pass, and believe which will not have diluted Hcg content) again tested myself with pregnancy test kit on Aug 14, result was negative and lastly decided to test with early morning first urine pass of the day and had done it with early morning around about 3.30am on Aug 15, result was negative.

On Aug 15, visited gynaecologist, first questionn from Dr was " Do you had any physical contact with male" I told no as I was with my mother, & I was given medicine " primolut n" for 5 days and even if I wont get periods after this I am asked to under go few tests and they are thyroid & PCOD Scan.

My question is what is reason for Periods delay? coz of Pregnancy? or is there any other reason?
Does Mensta medicine has any effect on Pregnancy test? or am I really not preg and periods are delayed for other reasons? Need your valuable suggestion and advise and any measures to get periods.

Thanks in advance,
XXXX

Brief Answer:
Pregnancy is rare

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome to healthcare magic.I understand your concern.
In my opinion the delay of period cant be due to pregnancy.
Because the true intercourse was not done and if there was any pregnancy the urine pregnancy test would be positive by now.
The causes of irregular periods are thyroid abnormalities, polycystic ovarian disease(PCOD),stress, overweight or obesity and anaemia.
So all the above causes should be ruled out.
The period usually occurs 3-10 days after finishing the primolut-N course.
So relax and check for the period.
Mensta might not be the reason for period delay as it usually given to regularize periods.
If overweight or obese weight reduction helps in regularisation of periods.
Hope this satisfies your query.
Feel free to discuss furthur.

Hello Doctor,

Thank you very much for the advice.

I have a couple of questions that I would like to get clarified.

1. Does Mensta affect the pregnancy test reading ?
2. it has been 3 days since I started taking the primolut N tab (6 tab).
the following are what I have experienced after the course started.
day 2 onwards :
I have very slight itching in the vaginal opening. no problem during urine passing. and also noticed there was a very slight white discharge on my under pants. it did not seem to be the regular sticky transparent fluid. it seemed more like chalk powder.
sometimes both the sides of abdomen pains. ( bearable very slight).
Is there anything serious that I should be worried about ? do i need to consult ?

Brief Answer:
Mebsta doesn't effect pregnancy test

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, goodday.I got your query.I understand your concern.
In my opinion the mensta is a medicine given in cases of irregular periods or heavy bleeding. It doesn't effect the pregnancy test result.
The pregnancy occurs if the semen is ejaculated inside or around the vagina during the fertile period. As nothing such happened there is no chance of pregnancy. So relax.
The itching and white discharge are not the effects of primolut N tablets.
The white discharge with itching mostly go in favour of candidiasis, the yeast infection.
Dont worry. Its not a major problem. It is a simple vaginal infection caused by fungus. With appropriate treatment it will subside.
Apply candid dusting powder over the vulva.Take cetrizine tablets twice daily. This gives relief from itching.
Wear loose cotton inners.
And avoid tight clothing.Because sweating might predispose to infection leading to itching.
Avoid scented deodorants or scented toilet papers as they might cause allergy and itching.
If not subsiding then you can consult doctor.
Hope this satisfies your query.
Feel free to discuss furthur.

Thank you very much doctor. That information has really calmed me down a bit. I did not have the itch or chalk powder after that day.
I finished the primolut n course yesterday morning.

Could you please tell me how to go about if I do not get my periods in the expected next 5 days.. What should I look for? Any casualties I should be prepared to face ?
Hope I can omit the cause as pregnancy now and go ahead confidently with my mom for medication. Or is there a chance even now ?

Brief Answer:
100% no chance of pregnancy

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear,i got your query.I understand your concern.Iam glad to answer you again.
In my opinion in case of negative urine pregnancy test the period usually occurs after 3-10 days after finishing the course of primolutN.
So you can wait upto 10 -15 days for period.
Dont worry. You can take my word there is no chance of pregnancy as per your history.
No specific symptoms you will face with no period.
In case of primolut N there are no life threatening casualities.
So relax dear and consider adapting a healthy lifestyle for regularisation of cycles.
Hope this satisfies your query.
Feel free to discuss furthur.
Best regards....Dr.Srilatha
