What Causes Constant Crying And Lack Of Appetite After Vaccination?

default
Posted on Tue, 18 Nov 2014
Question: Baby is 6 week old. Today we visited a doctor and vaccinated our baby with OPV,Hepatitis-B,DPT and HIB vaccine. After couple of hours baby started crying continuously and even refused to drink mother's milk may be because of the pain of injection but baby drank Nestle NAN 1 PRO from the feeding bottle.

Questions:
Why is baby refusing to suck mother's milk which it took before vaccination without any problems?
How will the pain felt by the baby?
Is there any way to vaccinate the baby in painless method? I have heard of painless vaccinations but not sure if they really exist.

Brief Answer:
There is no cause for concern

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to Healthcare-Magic
Greetings of the day

Dear Mr XXXXXXX

Excessive crying and refusal to feeds especially breast feeding is occasionally seen in babies after DPT vaccination. Babies have to put in effort in form of sucking from breast, as they have pain they resort to less effort of feeding like bottle feeding. Babies also appreciate pain, which usually manifest as change in vital signs like alteration in heart rate, excessive crying , refusal of feeds, lack of sleep.

Do not worry, the baby will settle down and be fine.

Painless vaccination are available only for DPT vaccine, but are not routinely recommended or used. Even though the name is painless, there is definitely reaction to antigen of vaccination, which causes pain and fever.

I would advise you the following

1. Do not rub or vigorously massage the site of vaccination.
2. Gentle massage with oil and followed by hot water bath will be helpful. Pour hot water(not too hot) at the site of vaccination. The warmthness will reduce pain and discomfort
3. Paracetamol drops will decrease pain
4. Do continue exclusive breast feeding till 6 months of age

Do get back to me if you need any further assistance, will be glad to assist you.

Take Care
