What Causes Chest Muscle Pain?

default
Posted on Mon, 29 Dec 2014
Question: I am having chest muscle pain for a while now. Whenever i do any exercise such as push ups or lift heavy things, the center of my chest feels very tender and hurts. and then after a few days pain subsides .
I had taken Xray, Treadmill test and Vitamin test. Xray and Treadmill test showed no problems with lung or heart. Vitamin test showed deficiency in vitamin D. I took vitamin D injections in july (1 injection per week for 4 weeks).
But this pain still exists once in a while. Chest feels tight also.
What should i do ?

Brief Answer:
Could be a musculoskeletal pain

Detailed Answer:
Hi, I am Dr Mittal. I have read your query. I think I would be able to help you. The symptoms of the query are quite suggestive of a musculoskeletal pain. In this type of pain , the symptoms increase when you are doing some activity that uses the involved the affected area. I think I would suggest that you avoid the exercises that stretch the muscles too much.

I think I will suggest that you try some antacids, pain killers and inflammatory medicines. Taking rest will help the muscles rest. That would be important to let the muscles heal.

I have tried to make it as simple as possible. I hope that the information helps you. Please feel free to contact us for more information. Best of luck. Dr Mittal.

In july i had taken the vitamin D injections and medicines and the pain was very minimal (2/10) .Then the pain returns in the mornings if i slept sideways on my left side. So then for the next few days, i dont sleep sideways and the pain reduces. This has been going on for more than 4-5 months.
Also, i have noticed that the pain increases a bit if i smoke a cigarette(very occasional smoker, 1 or 2 cigarette in a week).

Is there any connection between smoking and this chest pain ?

This condition feels like it is never going away.

Please suggest some medicines i can use that will cure this.
Thank you for reply.

Brief Answer:
ct chest suggested

Detailed Answer:
Hi
I still strongly consider the possibility of musculoskeletal pain. The point of pain on lying in one side and increased pain on coughing suggest the same.

However, in view of your history of smoking, I now consider another strong possibility. This may be due to a lung condition. The smoking could be a contributory factor.
I would therefore suggest getting a ct chest. This may show the exact lesion of the lungs. It will also tell us about the musculoskeletal condition in more details. A chest X ray may nor be sufficient and can be falsely negative.

I have tried to make it as simple as possible. I hope that the information helps you. Please feel free to contact us for more information. Best of luck. Dr Mittal.
