Posted on Tue, 10 Jun 2014
Question: My wife has bladder pain and when she pees only minimal comes out
Her bladder hurts to the touch as well was put on ciprofloxacin after quick check by her dr . Dr didn't feel her sore area / just prescribed it

Was checked for infection and came back negative but she was prescribed the pills before
Was sent for X-ray after and just waiting for results

Her mom died of stomach cancer but was a heavy drinker
Wife very rarely has a drink. Our diets are not the healthiest

She has been on arthritis meds for 20 years
Also quit having period 3 years ago and her dr said likely due to meds without testing her
Any thoughts

Brief Answer:
She seems to be having "cystitis"

Detailed Answer:
Hi Mr XXXXX,
welcome to HCM.
There is nothing to worry about your wife.
She seems to be having "cystitis", a condition where bladder is inflammed.
It could be because of infection or other causes like bladder stones or cancer (only very rarely), but infection is the commonest cause.
in her case, i believe it is just infection, even though tests were negative. If she gets no response with ciprofloxacin, she may require urine culture and sensitivity and ultrasonography of abdomen.
I don't think x ray would help.
Her lack of menstruation is due to her menopause, as she has crossed 40s.
hope i am clear.

When my bladder is full it hurts more. My urine flow is a trickle. The ex ray and blood work came back negative. What is done for Cystitis if it is not caused from infection. My doctor now believes its my bowels causing the problem and wants me to take laxatives.

Brief Answer:
may be drug resistant cystitis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
cystitis can be caused by wide range of organisms and they can often be notoriously resistant to the common antibiotics, in which case, simple antibiotics do not work, forcing us to look at alternative diagnosis.
If really infection is not the cause, then the cause should be picked up and treated (like stopping the offending drug, removing bladder stone or cancer etc.)
I do not know why bowel problem is suspected with the symptoms you have, when everything seems to be localizing to bladder. You may use laxatives as prescribed, but you will need sonogram of abdomen (not x ray) and urine culture and sensitivity.
Untreated or partially treated urinary infections can complicate and hence i would suggest you to get yourself thoroughly examined by a urologist.
hope i am clear.
