What Causes Acidity While Fasting?

default
Posted on Sat, 9 Jul 2016
Question: I have been doing intermittent fasting for about 6 weeks (Monday & Tuesday doing a quarter of my caloric intake for weight loss). Every time I pass gas I have a nonpainful watery discharge for about 4-weeks. I also developed I very acidly throat, which makes it difficult to swallow at times without taking licorice. I'm also taking a strong probiotic For 3-weeks or the same time of discharge. Lastly, I just recovered in mid-May from a cold or some other sort of a virus that made me weak and super dizzy. The dizziness seemed to come from the back of my head.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

I have gone through your medical history carefully and can say as following regarding your health problems:
- as you have been fasting, your stomach remains without food. This might increase the acidity of the stomach giving the sensation of burning on your throat and discharge while passing gas.

Furthermore, as your throat gets burnt, this means that the acid liquid of the stomach is going backwards to the esophagus and throat.

Probiotics are good choice to regulate intestinal flora.
However, you should treat the problems with stomach hyperacidity with antacids after meal first and see if it will get better.

Making changes in your diet can help reduce hyperacidity of the stomach.

- virus is often associated with weakness. Keep well hydrated and avoid fasting if you get the flu

Thank you for the advice. Could stress be a factor as well? These last two months have been the most stressful in my life and it is chronic.

Brief Answer:
Could be if no organic problem is found...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

Now, when discussing about a health issue, we are interested to rule out organic issues first. If no organic would be found, then, we can say that stress or other psychological/emotional factors could be possible causes.

Hope it answered to your question!

My final question: would a blood test reveal any answers?

Brief Answer:
Following tests

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

Blood electrolytes would identify any possible imbalance that would cause weakness.

Upper endoscopy will evaluate your stomach and its related problems like acid reflux or gastritis/ulcer.

A good physical examination of your anal area is required.

Hope this answers to your questions.
