What Causes A Swollen Uvula?

default
Posted on Sat, 14 Jan 2017
Question: My 20 year old son has a swollen uvula. We have been traveling in the last few day, flying, and probably not drinking enough water. He also has drunk some alcohol and smoked a few cigarettes. I have given him Benadryl and lots of water and sent him back to bed. He doesn't appear to have a fever or other symptoms. Should I try to get him to a doctor?

Brief Answer:
It can wait until he doesn't develop any other symptoms

Detailed Answer:
Hi! Welcome to health care magic! Thanks for sharing your concerns with us. We will try to help you in best way possible.

First of all, it is sad to know what your son had been experiencing lately. Based on the history you have shared, it is better to wait as their are no symptoms like fever or infection. It can be local inflammation due to multiple causes including the ones you have mentioned.

Meanhwile using anti histamines like cetrizine or loratidine and doing gargles with XXXXXXX warm saline water will help.

He should avoid using greasy, oily foods and cold fizzy drinks. Benedryl can be continued too. If it persists or signs of infection like fever comes in, he may need a medical review to add on antibiotics like augmentin or azithromycin.

Wishing him a quick recovery. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. Regards.
