Question: Hi
I took my son to take his varicella shot on Wednesday. he didn't get a fever, nor a rash around the vaccine but he just developed a rash. I have attached a picture. is this a reaction to the vaccine or an unrelated rash or mosquito bite?

Brief Answer:
could be from the vaccine

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for your question.
This type of rash could be from the vaccine. A mild skin rash that occurs several days after the shot is one of the known side effects of the vaccine.
It could also be from bites as you suggest.
In either case the rash should resolve in a few days.
If he should develop any shortness of breath, high fever or pain then you should get him to see a doctor right away.
Also make sure that you inform his doctor that he has developed this rash, they may want to take a look at it. Also they need to record it in his chart that he had this side effect to the vaccine.
Best wishes to you,
Dr. Robinson

Brief Answer:
it is possible

Detailed Answer:
It is possible for a mild form of varicella to develop after a vaccination. This would be a much milder case than if he had gotten the vaccine. In very rare cases if this happens, unprotected people in the household have become infected.
Please make sure his doctors are aware of this and if he appears to be sick in any way take him in for an exam.
