What Causes A False Positive Result For Cocaine While On Insulin?

Posted on Tue, 12 Jul 2016
Question: My son went to the hospital. Was involved in a car accident. He is bi-polar and takes certain medications. When he went in he didn't test positive for cocain. He is diabetic takes insulin. He was given for two days a lot of morphine for pain. Came out Monday and on Tuesday had a pea test and tested positive for cocain. Could the medications given to him at hospital altered the result? He had just been given Oxcarbazepin by his phychaitrist and he tested positive for speed while in hospital. He also takes Xanax, Abilify, Humalog, Lantus, Metformin, Doxepin, Simvastatin, Losartan, Omeprazole, Flexerill, Montelukast. He flunked his pea test at probation and was revoked and going to prison. He was surprised because he states he didn't do cocaine and when admitted at hospital, he did not test positive for that.

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and thanks for your question.

Unfortunately, it is not possible that this test was a false positive. Despite what your son is saying, he must have done cocaine Monday or Tuesday after leaving the hospital. The drugs he was given in the hospital would not cause a false positive for cocaine.

I was researching Web MD and asked "How can you have a false positive for cocaine"
and there were some sites there that said that medications that are interacted that can give false positive especially on the drug tests that are used that are not as exact as the ones the hospitals use especially if you are diabetic and are under insulin or other diabetic meds.

Detailed Answer:
Web MD is incorrect. That information is outdated and inaccurate. False positives for cocaine metabolites in contemporary urine tests are not possible, even with diabetic medications on board.
