What Are The Chances Of Reactivation Of TB Strain Post Completed Course Of Treatment?

default
Posted on Tue, 11 Nov 2014
Question: I am XXXXXX , a 27 year old male from XXXXXXX , XXXXXXX I was diagnosed with ileocecal tuberculosis(Non drug resistant) 5 years ago. After the completion of 12 months treatment i completely recovered and gained about 15 to 20 Kgs during and after the treatment. I had been leading a very unhealthy lifestyle(non nutritious diet , only a few hours of sleep, mental stress , lack of exercise and was underweight) for a year before the diagnosis , which my doctor thought was the cause of latent tb to progress to tb disease.Nevertheless , Ever since the treatment got over , i 've been in really good health.I've been taking really good care of my health(Highly nutritious food, 8 hours of sleep , exercise four times a weak , no stress , weight 80kg with a height of 5'9 , live in a clean envoirnment ). I have three questions here. 1) Are there any chances of relapse (re activation of the previous strain) in my case? 2)I 've heard that past TB patients are at a strongly increased risk of being reinfected with TB(New Strain) , so through maintaining a healthy lifestyle , can i possibly reduce the risk of being reinfected? 3) Does re activation or relapse of TB always result in MDR TB?
Your answer will be highly appreciated
Thanks and regards

Brief Answer:
less chances are there

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

Welcome to HealthcareMagic .

I read your query and understand your concern .

1)yes reactivation of same strain is possible but chances are less as you have completed proper course of treatment. It happens only when your immunity reduces like you suffer from severe illness or surgery etc . But since you are maintaining healthy life style this should not be a problem.

2)Infection with new strain is possible if you get exposed to any person having lung tuberculosis. The response to infection again depends on your immunity. But if your immunity is good reinfection and reactivation is less likely.

3)If at all reinfection occurs it may be drug resistant or it may not be. It depends on which strain you are affected . That can be made out by testing the resistance to drugs.

I suggest you to avoid exposure to anybody cough infront of you.

I suggest you to continue your healthy life style. You may additionally take multivitamin with antioxidant combination to boost your immunity or In diet you may take olive oil and fish and fruits, green tea to increase antioxidant intake .

Hope I have answered your query. If any further queries are there I would love to help.

Dear Dr XXXXXXX
Thanks a lot for your answer. It has really helped me to understand the situation. I consume a diet which includes fruits such as oranges , apples , guavas , bananas , papayas etc to make sure i get enough vitamins such as vitamin c for strong immunity. i also have one whole egg , green vegetables etc. I will add green tea as per your advice. So do i need to add a multivitamin to my diet or i can take all the nutrients naturally?

Thanks

Brief Answer:
naturally you may take

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

The diet you are taking is good source of vitamins. Just you need to add antioxidant which you will get by green tea . Also apple contains it.

So following this diet you don't need to take vitamin supplement . If anytime you start getting frequent infections in body like boils or sore throats or cold then start multivitamin tablets for a month or so.

During any illness also take multivitamin supplement as this will prevent any deficiency and also helps in curing fast. Other then that not needed.

Hope I have answered your query. If any further queries are there I would love to help.
