What Are The Chances Of STD Transmission Through Unprotected Oral Sex?

default
Posted on Mon, 6 Apr 2015
Question: I am a married man and a few days ago I had sexual intercourse with another man (sex worker).
During the intercourse I gave (briefly) and received unprotected oral sex. A day later, I have a very sore throat and I obviously worry.
I have read a few posts in this forum and I am trying to be logical about the whole situation. Here is my assessment of the situation, could you please let me know if I am thinking about this correctly or if I am completely off track. Thank you

1) I can only think of one STD that would give me a sore throat after oral sex and that is throat gonorrhoea.

2) penile gonorrhoea is rarely asymptomatic and symptoms usually appear within 2 to 5 days so if my partner had it, he would likely know about it, unless I have been very unlucky and he got it less than 5 days before.

3) even if he had it, my chances of getting it are still quite low

4) my sore throat appeared less than 24h after the encounter, wouldn't it have taken at least 2 days for the symptoms to appear

Thanks for your help

Brief Answer:
Gonorrhea, Chlamydia as well as Herpes can be transmitted by Oral sex

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us

I have understood your query and I would try to help you with it in the best possible way.

Unprotected receptive oral sex is a risk factor in terms of gonorrhea, chlamydia and rarely throat herpes as well.
Symptoms of these STD's can appear as soon as within a day or two.
Of course you cannot be sure whether and when he had any prior risky sexual contact before he had one with you and therefore you cannot presume anything about it.
Also the fact that he was a sex worker means that he must have been regularly having sex with other people too.
Penile gonorrhea is usually symptomatic, however, chlamydia is not that symptomatic and genital herpes too can be asymptomatic.
These however does not necessarily mean that your sore throat is indeed due to an STD and not otherwise but we need to consider these.
I suggest that you visit a sexual health specialist for physical examination and appropriate tests.
