Question: Yes...my mother (87 yrs old) has bleeding from the rectum. She has a diagnosis of divirteculitis (sp). She was just admitted to emergency on 1/23/16 and had a colonoscopy and an endoscopy. She was given a semi-clean XXXXXXX of health. After being discharged the sibling were wondering, what could we do to help her with her blood loss. The only answer we could come up with is for her to take iron supplements and eat beets. Can you give us some suggestions for blood loss minus having blood replacement. Thanks

Brief Answer:
Diverticulitis needs supportive care.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for asking

I read your question and i understand your concern. If diverticulitis is the diagnosed cause for the bleeding per rectum and colonoscopy has ruled out other sinister causes then all you need to do is control diverticulitis . Antibiotics, pain killers, soft fluid diet are the mainstay of therapy. Diets rich in fiber and fluids should be administered. addition of probiotics to diet may also help.

beet and iron supplements itself give stools false blood color and may be mistaken for blood, so what you are considering blood might be result of iron supplements and beets.

I hope it helps. take good care of yourself and your mother and don't forget to close the discussion please.

Khan
