Suggest Treatment For Withdrawal Symptoms Of Beta Blockers

Question: I have had many symptoms in last 1.5 years or so which have gone undiagnosed. My family doctor said I qualified to get on metoprolol succinate ER 25mg since my BP would randomly spike. In the last few years I would get randomly sick and noticed it more often while working in a chemical lab (my job). I have been off the month of January from work and my symptoms seem to have improved daily through some detoxification methods (since I assumed it could be chemical related through work). I tried to go back to work in the lab on February 1st and after about 2 hours on shift I started feeling miserable again. I worked 12 hour swing shifts for 8 years and have been in the lab for 5 of those years. My family doctor put me off again until March 15th, but many of my original symptoms returned (GERD diagnosis from 3 doctors, chest pains, head and neck shooting pains, spiking BP, racing pulse, night sweating). I tried Nexium and then Prilosec for the GERD, but I still get a painful feeling right in bottom middle of sternum at times (Xiphoid area). The last 3 days at night have been miserable. I asked my family doctor if I could get off the metoprolol 25mg or if I had to wean off? He stated that is the lowest dosage and that I could simply stop it at any time. I then asked a few friends of mine in the medical field and they disagreed and said I could have horrible side effects unless I weaned off. About 3 days ago I started breaking my pills in half by hand (assuming that's 12.5mg) logically. For 2-3 days now I seem to feel fine during the day (with normal BP and pulse), but when I get into bed at night I'm miserable. My night time symptoms include headaches in the front, sides, and back of my head, rare sharp pains in back of head, insomnia, rare chest pains, and last night my body temperature dropped to 96.1 after being in bed for about 45 minutes. All of these symptoms are very alarming to me and seem to happen more so when laying down or trying to fall asleep. As a precursor to all this I'd like to say I've had a stress test which was fine a year ago, many EKG's, bloodwork, chest x-rays, abdominal x -rays, CT scans on my brains and all returned normal (except for the GERD diagnosis). I have always been an athlete and have no history of medical issues except my mom's side has arthritis and my father's side have stomach issues. I do not smoke, no drugs, and rarely drink. I'd like to get off metoprolol and am willing to ride the storm out if you feel it could be side effects from trying to wean off it? Any help would be greatly appreciated since I am in misery and just want to get back to a new job in life.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for choosing HCM,
Firstly beta blockers are not first line anti hypertensive medications.
As per your query beta blockers should always be tappered off,Sudden withdrawal of beta blockers can cause withdrawal symptoms. So do not suddenly stop taking metoprolol tablets; suddenly stopping metoprolol tablets could worsen your condition could cause palpitations, sudden rise in blood pressure, dizziness etc.
Initially make the doses 12.5mg twice daily for a week after that take 12.5mg once daily for a week,Then take 12.5mg once alternate day for a week after that you can stop metoprolol.
Though not asked yet for GERD and Heartburn
Omeprazole and all other proton pump inhibitors are very safe medicines and can be taken Please request your Gastroenterologist to prescribe you Levosulpiride or Domperidone 30 mg once daily in combination with proton pump inhibitor. This will help you symptomatically in long term .Acotiamide can also be added to your regimen thrice daily . Please discuss these options with your Gastroenterologist.
headache, sharp pains in back of head, insomnia, chest pains, and body temperature drop are most likely related to your anxiety levels.
To calm down your anxiety levels anti anxiety medicines like clonazepam or etizolam can be taken for a few weeks as decided by treating doctor.
Over all a healthy life style should be followed along with medicines,
Thanks
