after 5 minutes of taking breast milk she vomited really hard (projectile vomiting)

Brief Answer:
Pyloric stenosis is a possible cause

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

Although it could indeed be pyloric stenosis, I would need some more information to be able to comment further.
1. Did the vomiting occur only today or had it been occurring right from the begining? If it did not start at birth, when did it start?
2. Has the child been gaining weight after birth?
3. Was she on breast feeding earlier? How well did the child tolerate breast feeding/formula feeds earlier? Has Similac been given earlier and was it tolerated well if given earlier?
4. Is the vomitus yellowish or greenish in colour?
5. Any other signs that you wish to mention?
6. Has she been feeding well?

Please revert back with the requested details and I would be happy to help further. Projectile vomiting can indeed be a sign of pyloric stenosis but it can also be due to not being able to tolerate formula feed.

The symptoms of pyloric stenosis are projectile non bilious vomiting, inability to tolerate feeds, failure to gain weight. On feeling the abdomen, the doctor would be able to feel a hard lump in case of pyloric stenosis. Dehydration and acid-base or salt imbalance are other findings that need to be evaluated by a doctor.

I would therefore strongly insist that you visit a pediatrician and get the child examined.

Waiting for your response.

1. Did the vomiting occur only today or had it been occurring right from the begining? If it did not start at birth, when did it start?

ans: she did projectile vomiting only today...but she does some curdled vomiting often.

2) Has the child been gaining weight after birth?

ans: yes she did gain good weight as she was 2.46 kgs on 8th oct and she was 4.33 kgs on 4th dec when last i checked weight

3) Was she on breast feeding earlier? How well did the child tolerate breast feeding/formula feeds earlier? Has Similac been given earlier and was it tolerated well if given earlier?

ans: she has been on breast milk since beginning and also she takes formula milk once a day since last month and i guess she has been tolerating well. she normally takes formula 4 ounce everyday and today i gave her 6 ounce (2 ounce in afternoon and 4 ounce at night). she wanted to have more milk so i gave her breast milk and then she started playing with me and when i was changing her wet daiper she did projectile vomit.
Normally after formula she passes stool or vomits curdled milk sometimes , even with breast milk she vomits (not projectile) curdled milk or proper milk sometimes

4. Is the vomitus yellowish or greenish in colour?
ans: it is white in colour

5. Any other signs that you wish to mention?

ans: she has been sleeping for 6 to 7 hours continuously these days

6. Has she been feeding well?

ans: yes

Is it also possible since she had too much milk and over filled herself and did projectile vomiting?

is projectile vomiting once conclude pyloric stenosis?

Brief Answer:
Probabilty can be ruled out only after visiting a doctor

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back with the details.

I have gone carefully through the details, and now the possibility of pyloric stenosis seems slightly lesser but cannot be ruled out. All I can say that one episode of projectile vomiting need not necessarily be pyloric stenosis. But it is worthwhile to visit a doctor and get it ruled out.

Intermittent vomiting of curdled milk if lesser than 50% of the amount taken in the last feed would be considered within normal limits. But if the amounts have been more than 50%, the possibility of pyloric stenosis increases reasonably. Sometimes, pyloric stenosis manifests itself not before 8-10 weeks, so, the possibility cannot be ruled out. The increased sleeping over the last few days could be due to lethargy and increases the concerns whether something was being missed out.

In summary, I would suggest you not to panic. Just visit a doctor and things would be clearer. Let me assure you that pyloric stenosis is a condition that is very easy to to treat. The surgery is very simple and takes no more than 15 mins. All the surgeon has to do is to XXXXXXX the part. So, stay relaxed. Things would just be fine.

Wishing you all the best.
