Question: Hi - I'm 69 and a bit confused with what my doctor is telling me and what I'm feeling and also reading on B complex shots. I had been getting B12 shots from my doctor every 3 weeks and my nurse practitioner weekly between doc visits for the last 3 years. I then started getting weekly B complex shots from my Nurse Practitioner in San XXXXXXX when I don't see my primary care doctor. The B complex give me a lot of energy, feeling of well being and spring in my step. My most recent bood work have my hemoglobin at 20.3...My nurse practitioner says the hemoglobin will be a little high on most everyone on B complex but it's not an issue and there are no side effects. My primary care doc is very very conservative and wants me to only get B 12 from her every 3 weeks for the next 3 months. I'm thinking maybe my primary doc is annoyed that I'm seeing someone else. Is there any harm in my continuing with the B complex. Possibly cutting it off like 2 weeks before my next Blood test in April. Thay are both females and may be somewhat XXXXXXX Thanks

Brief Answer:
It depends on your vitamin B12 level in blood.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome to HCM.

I have read your query carefully and understand the concern.

So,you are taking vitamin B12 shots for the last 3 years from your doctor and nurse practitioner.

But let me clarify here,

How many injections you have been given in this last 3 years? What is the dose?
Have you undergone serum vitamin B12 level and if yes, then what was the value?

It is good that you felt well with lot of energy after injections but it all depends on the vitamin B12 level in blood because the excess B12 shots may cause some side effects (although uncommon),so must be taken under doctor's guidance with vitamin B12 level monitoring periodically.

Since you are going for blood testing in April,it will depend upon your last vitamin B12 level and how many shots you have taken so far.

Kindly get back to me with more information and if possible then tell me your last vitamin B12 level.

Awaiting your response.

Regards,

Dr.Sandip Kabra
