Suggest Treatment For Unpleasant Odor In Nose And Mouth While Having Sinusitis

default
Posted on Wed, 8 Jun 2016
Question: I have had a very unpleasant smell in my nose and mouth for 4 weeks, my GP gave me a 7 day course of 500mg tabs of Clarithromycin, this cured the smell, but a week later the symptoms have returned, what can I do now,? Sterimar saline spray does not help.I am reluctant to have more antibiotics but I have NEVER had this smell before and would like to clear it up, as it seems to be a deeply hidden bacteria infection in my sinuses. I have no pain or headache

Brief Answer:
Most likely persisting sinusitis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thank you for asking HCM

I have gone through your query. Your problem can be most likely sinusitis. There could be infected secretions trapped in sinuses. Proper antibiotic therapy and nasal decongestants will be helpful in such case. Saline nasal sprays won't be effective in such case. You may need decongestant nasal sprays like xylometazoline (otrivin) nasal sprays for this. Broad spectrum antibiotic therapy with antibiotics like Co-amoxiclav will be helpful. Taking chewable vitamin C daily is also good for fast recovery. You can also take steam inhalation with inhalent capsules.

A consultation with ENT specialist is well appreciated. If there is no improvement even after antibiotic therapy and nasal decongestants then puncture and drainage of sinus will be required after x ray of paranasal sinuses.

Let me know if anything not clear.
I am happy to help you.
Thanks.
