Suggest Treatment For Tonsillitis

Posted on Tue, 5 Apr 2016
Question: My 8 year old son had a tonsilectomy nearly 3 weeks ago but is feeling really dizzy in the mornings, he looks awfully pale and was sick yesterday morning. I have been sending him to school ( as he had 10 days off before) but I really think I need to sort this out today and get a doctors appointment now. Could he have an ear infection? Should I ring the ENT department?}

Brief Answer:
Inform the ENT Department immediately.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. Inform the ENT Department at once and get him examined, including the throat and ears.

2. Avoid sending him to school till he is examined. Check if his stools are dark or black.

3. If he looks pale, is dizzy and sick, he may be anaemic either because he had low hemoglobin before surgery, blood loss during/ surgery, infection or if he is not eating well due to these problems.

4. Ear infections are more common due to adenoids. Adenoids usually regress after the age of 8 years. Was the treatment of adenoids included earlier? Does he have mouth breathing or snoring at night?

5. Get an ear drum examination, a PTA (Pure Tone Audiogram) and an Impedance Audiogram (Tympanogram) done. Upload the reports here. You can also upload a clear close-up image of his throat showing the operated tonsil area.

6. Blood tests to rule out anaemia and infection are recommended. Medication should be started accordingly.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
