Suggest Treatment For Tingling In Arms And Hands

default
Posted on Fri, 12 Aug 2016
Question: I asked about a heartburn like pain a few weeks ago which coincided with tingling in the arms and hands and starting in the neck area and over my shoulderts. The " heartburn" has gone but I still have the tingling in the areas mentioned. Could I have a trapped nerve?

Brief Answer:
Moderate chances

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for the query.

Sometimes heart burn was related to tingling in the extremities. If you continue to have tingling after standard therapy against heart burn we can evaluate further. One of the reasons as you mentioned is trapped nerve. However I would look at nutritional deficiency before trapped nerve for a 72 yr old woman.
They can be Vit B1, B2, B12 deficiency, Iron, Calcium deficiency, Vitamin D as well. The other point is diminished blood supply to the arms and hands because of arteriosclerosis in elderly.
The way to rule out trapped nerve is examination by a neurologist or neurosurgeon. They can see if the muscles are wasted and the sensations are well responding on clinical examination.

So I think you can wait for another one week if you already on PPI medicines like Omeprazole or Rabeprazole. These also reduce the absorption of calcium which can be also a reason. Meantime you can schedule an appointment for clinical examination for probable trapped nerve and blood work up for the above mentioned nutritional deficiency.

Do let me know if you need clarifications on the said steps above.

Wish you good health.
