Suggest Treatment For Swelling On The Right Toe

default
Posted on Thu, 20 Oct 2016
Question: For the past three months, I've had swelling in my right toe on top of the joint closest to the end of my toe (as opposed to the one closest to the main body of my foot). There appears to be something on the surface under the skin on top of the joint. It's not painful to the touch, warm, or red. It's just there. It appears to be causing some swelling, which causes some numbness and some nerve pulses that run up my foot. I'm 51, lean, eat really well (paleo diet--very strict), and exercise every day. I've read a lot about gout, but this seems different from much of the standard gout information I've read on the web. Do you have any thoughts on this? What it might be? And how I might be able to cure it? For several months prior to my toe issues, I spent a lot of time kneeling, where my feet were extended (pointed) while doing my work. It was about three months ago when I began to experience the numbness and nerve sensations. It was soon thereafter when I noticed the swelling. Thanks!

Brief Answer:
It might be sebaceous cyst or ganglion

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.

This seems like a swelling in the dermal region of skin. It is small and causing numbness only because of its size. It is not painful therefore it is not infected.

Thus it is either sebaceous cyst or ganglion. It does not seem dangerous. An examination by your family physician or general surgeon and an ultrasound of the lump will help in diagnosis. Treatment is surgical removal if its causing discomfort, its developed complications or just for cosmetic reasons.

Hope it helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.
