default
Posted on Thu, 9 Oct 2014
Question: This isn't really a question, but I'm nearly 100% sure that I have Sociopathy/Anti-Social Personality Disorder, all I really need is the diagnosis. I guess if I had to choose a question, it'd be, "What now?"

Brief Answer:
CBT might help

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for asking your query. It would have been helpful had you mentioned how you have come to a conclusion that you have anti-social personality disorder. And what are the aspects that you are finding troublesome that you feel that something needs to be done.

In case, you are anti-social personality disorder and you feel that you need help regarding it, the best way to go forward will be to seek a psychiatric consultation and plan to start therapy, specifically cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) for the same. It would help in dealing with the mal-adaptive aspects o your personality and help change them. CBT will be a treatment consisting of multiple sessions, and the main idea will be to identify the thought and the behavioral pattern that is causing problem and accordingly try to modify them.

I do hope that answers your query. Please let em know if you have any further doubts. I will glad to help.

Best wishes,

Dr. Sunil Gupta

Well, I took a few pseudo-tests online on Sociopathy/ASPD because I had been suspicious for quite some time that I did indeed have a disorder, and as I read the traits of a sociopath, it shocked me at how creepily accurate the descriptions were. I think the first time it really hit me that I had a disorder is when my dad passed away last March, and I should have cried and mourned, but I felt nothing. I just... didn't care, as terrible as that sounds. I found myself crying not because I wanted to, but because I had to in order to fool everyone around me and make it look sincere. I find myself always lying effortlessly and without guilt or remorse for hurting other people in the process. I almost find a sort of amusement in it. I always pretend to be someone I'm not so people don't see through me. It's the oddest thing but I find it pleasurable to befriend people and watch them begin to trust me and get attached to me even though I don't feel the same way. Toying with someones emotions and manipulating them for my own personal gain has been something I've always done, ever since I was a small child.

I honestly don't think anything needs to be done about as it isn't interfering with my integration as a member of society, and it's not really affecting anyone other than myself, but it would be nice to have the diagnosis so I can be 100% sure of what I'm dealing with here.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for following up and providing more details regarding yourself which gave me a much clearer insight into your problem.

From you description, you definitely seem to fit the XXXXXXX for anti-social personality disorder. And I would rather that you reconsider that anything need not be done for it. You are already getting affected, and that is why you are looking for what's wrong with you. Moreover, if you take proper steps now, you can ensure that you can remain trouble free ahead, even if you might not have any problem now.

So, I do hope that you would reconsider your decision about not doing anything about it and go ahead and try to modify it.

I do hope, I was able to help you with your query. Please let me know if you have anything more to ask. I will be glad to help. In case you don't have any further query, please do close the discussion and rate the answer.

Best wishes,

Dr. Sunil Gupta
