Question: Good morning! I'm experiencing extreme pain in my right knee making it hard to walk for several days. I believe it to be gout since I had gout back in middle 90's
Is there a over the counter medication or drink plenty of water

Thank you!

Brief Answer:
Can be gouty arthritis

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting the question.
I have gone through your medical history in detail.

If you are sure that it is gout then tablets of allopurinol, colchicine or febuxostat need to be taken to reduce the raised uric acid levels.
But i would suggest you to first check the present uric acid levels before taking these tablets.
If it is confirmed, then you can get these medicines prescribed from your doctor as i do not think these are available over the counter.

Along with the above medicines, analgesic ant-inflammatory tablets like ibuprofen, tramadol or diclofenac should be taken for faster recovery.
Do not apply anything warm to the affected area.
Compression bandage,rest are essential.

You should rule out other causes of knee pain by getting an Xray done and consulting an orthopaedist.

I hope the answer was useful to you.

Feel free to ask me any follow up queries that you may have.

Thank you.
Wish you a speedy recovery.
