Suggest Treatment For Severe Pain And Discomfort In Shoulder After Injury

default
Posted on Mon, 5 Jan 2015
Question: Hi, yesterday I fell down some stairs. I landed pretty hard but was able to get back up no problem. My lower arm has a bruise on it but it's my upper arm/shoulder that's bothering me. I broke my shoulder horseback riding years ago. I still have full mobility of my arm (I can raise it above and behind but with some discomfort/ache) and there is no outward bruising in that area. It almost feels like my muscle is bruised. Is this something to be concerned about? What treatment should I pursue? Thanks.

Brief Answer:
An x-ray of injured area is necessary to rule out possible fractures.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Human body is a genius construction. Soft tissues and bones are connected in such way that the one stabilizes the other one. So in case of bone fracture, muscles can hold the bone in proper position and take over bones function for some time. That is why, some bones fractures can give no symptoms or the symptoms are thought to be just a soft tissues injury.
That is why I suggest you to do not ignore the injury. As long as you wont have an X-ray of injured area, you can not be sure of what exactly has happen. That is why I suggest you to consult orthopedist and have arm x-ray done.
Moreover, even if there is no fractures, you may need some temporal immobilization of the injured limb. This is the best treatment (injured part needs some rest for proper healing).

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.
