Suggest Treatment For Severe Cough With Hoarseness

default
Posted on Thu, 7 Jul 2016
Question: Allergies seem to be worst this year, thus, my coughing has increased to the point of hoarseness two weeks ago. Attempts for treating the cough for years have not been successful. Years of asthma meds not successful. Then years of allergy meds not successful. Allergy shots for about 5 years didn't work as there were no changes in the allergy tests. Problem seemed to be with the post nasal drip that gets out of control from time to time where I am coughing in controllably for 20 minutes at times. 10 years ago treated for acid reflux to stop the hoarseness at that time, but coughing from the post nasal drip could not be controlled. Prednisone was prescribed each of the times where the cough was totally out of control from the post nasal drip. I gave up on seeing the doctors and resorted to cough drops and water. The hoarseness for last two weeks is bothering me. I was not yelling prior to onset. I have never smoked. Now what? Any ideas? Email address is YYYY@YYYY

Brief Answer:
Most likely Laryngo pharyngeal reflux.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thank you for asking HCM

I have gone through your query. Your problem can be most likely from Laryngo phayngeal reflux. Using most advanced proton pump inhibitors like Rabeprazole sustained release along with motility enhancer will be helpful than Prevacid. this should be taken prior to break fast daily. If you were my patient I would also suggest taking combination of antihistamines like Levocetirizine and mast cell stabilizers like monteleukast daily long term.
You should take light meals in short intervals. Avoid excess fatty , fried , greasy and junk foods. Carbonated drinks alcohol and coffee should be avoided also. Take dinners at least 2 hours before bed time. Raise the head end with more pillows while sleeping also. You can take chamomile tea or ginger tea which gives calming effect also.

let me know if anything not clear.
I am happy t help you.
Thanks.
