Suggest Treatment For Polycythemia

default
Posted on Tue, 13 Sep 2016
Question: MY mother was just diagnosed with polycythemia. But the doctor won't see her until October. Does this mean it is not as serious as it seems. I read that this condition only gives people two years to live. Am I over worried? She is all that I have in this life?

Brief Answer:
Should be seen earlier

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.

There are two types of polycythemia, primary or polycythemia Vera, where there is no other cause and just the bone marrow production of red cells is high, and secondary, where some other illness is causing the increased production.

In any case, we recommend an early evaluation so that appropriate treatment can be started. There can be an increased risk of blood clotting inside blood vessels resulting in stroke, etc so at least some treatment to reduce that risk is required. Life span can be more depending on the type of polycythemia and the aggressiveness of the disease.

October is too late for me. You should try another hematologist.

Hope this helps.
Regards
