Question: Doctor,

My brother returned from a very cold region back to west XXXXXXX a week ago. For the past 1 week he has been having a persistent headache ( felt a bit of the headache while abroad) which tends to gravitate around his eyes and extends towards his forehead. The pain seems to be triggered quicker when he is working in front of the computer. He has however noticed that it is not only present when he is in front of the computer. The pain subsides when he is resting, on the bed or when he bends over the desk with his head resting on his arms. He has taken some Ibuprofen prescribed by a doctor but that has not helped much. He has gone for an eye test to check if there is any ocular related causes but nothing was found. he has been tested for malaria which came out negative. The doctors say he has slightly elevated lymphocyte level which suggest his body if fighting a viral infection. Kindly advise what next he can do.

Brief Answer:
Water/exercise

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for your question.

Have the doctors checked him for a sinus infection? This can cause headaches, there are sinuses below and above the eyes. Sometimes an antibiotic is required to treat a sinus infection. Also make sure that he is well hydrated. He needs to be drinking at least 80 oz of water daily and avoiding all drinks with caffeine, sugar and alcohol.

Have him start a multivitamin if he is not already taking one. Exercise is important, it can be just walking for 30 minutes but it needs to be every day. If it persists and the doctors do not feel that it is a sinus infection he may need further testing.

If this is not resolving and his doctors can not find a cause, the he may need to see a neurologist, since they are the headache specialists

I hope he is getting some relief soon

Regards,
Dr. Robinson
