Posted on Tue, 2 Aug 2016
Question: I have a peculiar pain in my left leg. When i touch the skin with something either cold or hot it is really unbearable and a sharp pain will occur from time to time down the inside front of my calf to my foot. At other times it really doesn't hurt but I am aware of some discomfort

Brief Answer:
IT could be venous insufficiency or Sciatica.

Detailed Answer:
Hello Mam,
Thank you for your question and Welcome to Health Care Magic.
Please do let me know a few details.
Since when has the pain started?
Is there any swelling or redness in the limb?
Are you having fever intermittently?
Does the pain increase on walking or does it increase on standing by the end of the day?
Does it improve and decrease in mornings after getting up from sleep?
Does the pain start in the back?
It could be Varicose veins or Venous insufficiency. Please get yourself examined by a Surgeon and get a Color Doppler done of the limb involved.
This could help us to know what is wrong with your limb.
I would be able to help and guide you once I get answers to the above questions.
If the pain is severe then you can take Tab Paracetamol 500mg upto maximum 3 a day.
Take care and do let me know the details.

Pain only just started a day ago. No swelling no fever. When the skin is touched it feels normal but the sensation is painful much as a sting might be. There is nothing visible on the skin at all. I am a very active woman with no evidence of varicose veins and in good health no med except for hrt....good weight, etc. The sharp pain traveling along the limb intermittently occurred during the night as well. The leg feels alot better today and I am walking on it but keeping it elevated as much as possible.

I will follow up. Sciatica sounds like a possibility based on your recommendation.

Brief Answer:
It could be Sciatica or Nerve pain.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for the reply.
With the details it could be nerve pain - more like Sciatica.
You should try Spine extension exercises and see a Neurosurgeon if the pain persists. I feel that you should try exercises for a week or 10 days and if it gets relieved then good and then only continue exercises. If it does not get relieved then you should see the Neurosurgeon.
You can take Tab Cipzox MR if the pain is too severe. During bouts of severe pain please do not indulge in any kind of exercise.
Also, if there is numbness or weakness in any of the toes or feet then you should definitely get Neuro evaluation done earlier.
Take care and do let me know if there are any more queries.
