Suggest Treatment For Pain In The Arm Post Nexplanon Placement

Posted on Tue, 15 Nov 2016
Question: I got the Nexplanon birth control implant 3 weeks ago this next Monday. I can feel it just under my skin. It's a touch sensitive still but not too bad. No more brusing and it's not swollen or red. Looks fine. my question is, my arm is aching. Around it and even further from it. Not horrible, but noticeable. Like a dull aching. Is this normal? I spoke to the nurse at my doctor's office and she said it was. But I want to hear it from someone else too as I tend to over worry myself.

Brief Answer:
Yes, it is normal to feel achy around the implant site

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

Even though a Nexplanon insertion is relatively painless with local amsethesia, it is normal to feel pain around the injection site and in the surrounding area when the anesthesia wears off. When your body is healing, inflammation occurs around the area which can cause swelling and an achy feeling, like someone struck you in the arm.

Applying an ice pack for 20 minute intervals will help to reduce the pain, as well as pain relievers like ibuprofen.

If you start noticing any increasing redness in the area, or you develop a fever and the pain increases significantly, you should report back to your physician as these can be symptoms of infection.

I hope I was able to adequately answer your question today and that my advice was helpful. If you need any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Best wishes,

Dr. Brown

Brief Answer:
Yes it still is normal at 3 weeks

Detailed Answer:
Hello again, and I apologize for the delayed reply.

To clarify what I said above, again, as long as you do not notice any increasing redness in the area, or you develop a fever great than 38 Celsius or 101 degrees Fahrenheit, there is no reason to suspect anything is wrong.

I hope you are reassured and feel better soon.

Regards,

Dr. Brown
