Posted on Fri, 8 Aug 2014
Question: I was involved in a roll over car accident on 5/30/14 . My neck has been bothering me when i tilt it to the right and backwards and my right are go numb and tingles. I had an MRI on 7/11/14. The MRI Impression findings are as follows: 1: Moderate c5-C6 degenerative cervical disc disease with moderate right posterior osteophyte disc complex protrusion. 2: Milf left C-3-C4 , marked left C4-C5, marked right and mild left C5-C6 neural formina stenosis are seen due to impingement by osteophytes. What does all this mean??? Prior to this car accident I didnt not have any neck pain or issues. Is all of this caused by the car accident? Will the pain go away?

Brief Answer:
Yes. Related to accident.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The MRI scan is suggestive of a nerve root compression at the cervical vertebral level (C3-6) due to degenerative disc changes or cervical spondylosis. It happens primarily due to degenerative changes secondary to age in the cervical spine. A neck injury may also contribute to the degeneration.
Treatment includes
1. Use of cervical collar helps in immobilization and brings relief.
2. Medical drugs like pain killers - acetaminophen/ibuprofen and muscle relaxants might be helpful.
3. Methylcobalamin supplements are also recommended for nerve compression symptoms.
4. Cervical isometric exercises are beneficial to maintain the strength of the neck muscles. Neck and upper back stretching exercises, as well as light aerobic activities, also are recommended under the guidance of a physical therapist.
5. Hot fomentation helps in relieving acute symptoms.
6. You can avoid using a pillow.
With proper medicines and physiotherapy like cervical traction the pain relief is seen in 2-3 weeks.
I hope this answers your query.
