Brief Answer:
Kidney infection is from the bladder upwards or through bacteria in bloodstream

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. The commonest route for an infection involving the kidneys is through an ascending bladder infection. The infection first starts due to bavteria present in the urethra, then involves the urinary bladder. From there the bacteria go up the uteter which is a tube connecting kidney to bladder. Then they reach the kidney to cause infection.

2. Rarely the infection starts in another organ and the bacteria reach the kidney through the circulating blood.

3. If you experienced burning urination and pain in the lower abdomen and pelvis then it was an ascending infection from urinary bladder.

4. In case you had fever for few days with pain on the sides of upper abdomen then the infection reached the kidney through blood.

5. Any infection of the kidneys requires proper treatment and care. Wishing you a quick recovery.

Hope your query is answered.
Please do write back if you have any doubts.

Regards,
Dr.Vivek
