Posted on Wed, 12 Apr 2017
Question: my colonscopy reflected that I have diverticulitis. This is new in the last 5 years. I have "BM Leaks"for 5 yrs and don't know why. Sometimes spicy foods or fried foods cause it but not always. How do I stop bowl leak? I rarely have consitipation. I eat high fiber cereal and pasta. Can diverticulitis be reversed? Should I take over the counter fiber.

Brief Answer:
Supportive care

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for asking

I read your question and i understand your concern. Leaked bowel movements also called fecal incontinence is likely a sequelae of diverticulitis as diarrhea or constipation both can lead to this and diverticulitis is common predisposing factor. Diverticula are outpouchings of bowel and after age of 40 very common and inflammation of these packings is called diverticulitis. Diverticulitis is reversible with good diet and lifestyle and supportive care if its mild to moderate. If its severe and does not respond, then surgery is next step.

In flares of diverticulitis, liquid diet , antibiotics till recovery of inflammation followed by pain killers like tylenol for the pain is used and upto 70 to 10 % of cases of diverticulitis flares subside. Lifestyle and home remedies are needed here. Regular exercise, more fiber in diet and adequate fluids intake is helpful.

I hope it helps. Take good care of yourself and dont forget to close the discussion please.
