Suggest Treatment For Excessive Belching

Question: I've been burping for a month straight, It started the day after purging myself after a night of drinking. I saw a GI doctor. He diagnosed me with GERD and esophagitis. He put me on prilosec 20 mg BID. After I took it for 8 days and got no relief, I had an EGD done. The EGD showed bacteria and a plaque like substance that turned out to just be bacteria. My primary thought it may be a hiccup reflex and started me on thorazine. Ive been taking it for 4 days and no results. Had a CT of chest abdomen and pelvis earlier today. Also saw the GI doctor again yesterday and he had no answers except to tell me I could have aerophagia and may need to work on breathing differently. How do I breathe differently, and how do I start having aerophagia after 29 years of like. He also started me on carafate. I burp thousands of times a day. The only time I get any relief is when I lay flat on my stomach or sleep. I am going crazy and just want my "normal" life back. Could this be a psych disorder? Could I have a brain tumor? Are my doctors missing something. Do you have any thoughts or suggestions?

Brief Answer:
Kindly please continue with treatment and do lifestyle modification.

Detailed Answer:
Hello Sir,
Thanks for writing in to hcm
This is Dr.Riyanka Chail glad to be answering your query.

I have gone through your complaints in details and i can definitely reassure you that you donot have any brain tumour . Firstly please be relaxed.

You need to build up on your mental strength.

You have been diagnosed having GERD and the doctor has put you on proton pump inhibitors which is one of the best treatments for GERD. However, the medication does take time to work. Also , even psychological factors contribute as too much anxiety can increase GERD , hence you need to relax and be mentally happy.

An endoscopy has been done which shows bacteria as told by you so most probably it is a H.Pylori infection as thats the commonest one in stomach.
You could consult your doctor regarding treatment from H.Pylori using H.Pylori kit that contains a course of (Proton pump inhibitors, two types of broad spectrum Antibiotics ) taken for 7-14 days.

Tablet Thorazine shall reduce your anxiety and is usually given in mood disorders.
Carafate is sucralfate which reduces acidity.

Donot worry . Please take your medications on time . The medications might take 4-6 weeks to show its effects.

In the meanwhile kindly practice some lifestyle modifications so that the outcome is better. For example:

1. Avoid taking oily and spicy food.Take bland diet rich in fibres and fruits and
vegetables.
2. Avoid Alcohol and smoking.
3. Donot fast and Instead of taking three large meals , have six small meals.
Dont be empty stomach for more than 2 hours.
4. Donot lie down immediately after meals. Also, have your dinner atleast 2
hours before bed time.

Please also practice relaxation techniques like meditation and yoga. Also , keep yourself occupied with work and leisure activities to distract yourself from constant thinking of your problems.

Your doctors have been treating you appropriately so please dont worry. You need to give some time for medications to work.

Hope this answers your query. Don't worry .
Do write back if you have any further doubts.

I understand what you are saying. I have been trying to keep busy. I'm still going to work. I even went to the beach for a week and sat on the beach reading books but it still happens. At times the burps can occur every 2-4 seconds and last for hours. They occur from the minute I wake up until I go to sleep. It's really impacting my social life. Since it started I've only spent time with my fiancé and family. I've been avoiding my friends out of embarrassment. Also have been too embarrassed to go to the gym so I've gained about 5 pounds also. People have suggested that I do alternative therapies such acupuncture and hypnosis. Any thoughts on these? Also next time I see the doctor I was going to suggest a barium swallow and abdominal ultra sound. Does that sound like a good idea or are the test unnecessary? When the GI doctor mentioned aerophagia I've been driving myself crazy to think about my breathing and I'm pretty sure I'm not swallowing air but it still occurs.

Brief Answer:
Kindly consult a psychiatrist regarding excessive belching

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for writing back to us with queries.

Aerophagia is usually hinting towards mostly anxiety causes. Try and avoid chewing gums . Do breathing exercises - nostril breathing techniques to avoid ingestion of air through mouth.Donot take carbonated drinks.
Also drink good amounts of water as it reduces belching.

The belching mechanism can be monitored using methods like oesophageal electrical impedence/pH monitoring for gastroesophageal reflux monitoring.

If CT abdomen has been done after you developed the symptoms and is normal then even ultrasound will most likely be normal.

Kindly consult a psychiatrist regarding belching as it is a learned behaviour and hence attributed to anxiety and obsessive compulsive disorders and you may need to take treatment based on the findings of the psychiatrist.

Please relax because if you keep getting anxious it will only increase the anxiety and the problems.
Also kindly take walks and do moderate exercise and make sure you dont put on too much weight .

You could try for hypnosis as an alternative and even behavioural treatment by qualified professional psychiatrists/ psychologists.

Food enzymes syrup available over the counter have shown beneficial effects on many people.

Mainly donot isolate yourself from people. Interaction with people and maintaing a social life is very important no matter how your health. It gives alot of moral support.

Hope this answers your query. Don't worry .
