Suggest Treatment For Dry Mouth And Headaches

Posted on Tue, 20 Dec 2016
Question: Trying to figure out what's going on with me. I have cotton mouth even after drinking a lot of water, I feel like I have a fever but my thermometer isn't working and I have a slight headache and a bit of occasional burping. I also feel some degree of chills.

I've gotten a battery for my thermometer. Even though I feel warm to myself, the thermometer says my temperature is 97.5 degrees

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Without being able to examine you I can't be absolutely sure, but you may have a viral infection. By cotton mouth do you mean that your mouth feels dry, or do you actually see white patches or some other visual abnormality?

Thanks for checking your temperature. Do you have any upper respiratory symptoms such as nasal congestion, post nasal drainage, sore throat, swollen neck glands?

Are you excessively thirsty or are your drinking a lot because your mouth is dry? (I'm asking because excessive thirst can be a sign of diabetes).

Are you taking any new medications?

Do you take any medications on a daily basis?

I have no white patches. My mouth feels dry but it's not consistent. I have had nasal congestion recently as well as drainage but not today. No sore throat and no swollen glands.

I'm drinking because my mouth is dry. No medications, regular or otherwise. I also notice a degree of perspiration.

Thanks for providing the additional information.

This may all be due to a passing viral infection. I recommend resting as much as possible right now as this plays out. Tylenol can help the fever (as long as it isn't too sever) and the chills and mild sweating.

I'd give this another day or two. If however, you develop a high fever or the headache becomes more severe, then do go in to your doctor or an urgent care clinic where they can examine you and get a complete blood count with differential to check for signs of infection.

Please let me know if I can provide further information.
