Suggest Treatment For Diarrhea And Lower Back Pain After Taking Lisinopril

default
Posted on Tue, 25 Oct 2016
Question: I am 65 year old female. I had a colonoscopy about a year ago. Two polyps were removed. Non cancerous. I take 60 MG Lisonpril, Omeprozole and 25 mg Spironolactone. At the time that my doctor increased my Lisonpril dosage I started having diarrhea. Sometimes my stools are normal, sometimes I have diarrhea and lately a lot of mucous and of and on thinner stools. I have gained weight in the last year. About ten pounds. I have lower back pain during my walks. I just saw my doctor this last summer and I mentioned the diarrhea. She thought it might be the Lisonopril. There is no blood in my stools. I feel great, but am sometimes low in energy, but thought that might be because I weigh 215 lbs. and am old! What should I do?

Brief Answer:
Drug induced diarrhea

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
1) Does diarrhea means only change of consistency of stool or also increased frequency of stool? because, increased frequency of loose stool with increased amount of mucus might be due to inflammation on wall of intestine (intestinal wall become reddened and swollen due to which its absorption power decreases and diarrhea occur).
2) This inflammation might be due to inflammatory bowel syndrome (ulcerative colitis) or infection (non-specific/specific enteritis).
3) Yes, if you have noticed diarrhea after increasing dosage of Tab. Lisinopril then it might cause diarrhea.
4) Dosage of Tab. Lisinopril and Tab. Spironolactone must be decided based on primary disease for which they are started. If requirement of dosage is high and produce adverse effects then after consulting your family physician/treating doctor you should change to new drug from new class.
5) Even though you feel great from bowel clearance, your symptom of low in energy might be associated with diarrhea (loss of electrolytes)
6) I suggest to consult your physician to re-adjust dosage if diarrhea interferes your daily activity.

Hope I have answered your question. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help
