Brief Answer:
Probably an infection of the lungs due to a viral situation

Detailed Answer:
Hi!
Welcome to HealthcareMagic.
I can understand your concern.

I will try to give you my opinion but need some further details regarding:

What other signs and symptoms do you have ?

Any fever or weight loss ?

Any chest pain, difficulty in breathing ?

Do you suffer from any other diseases ?

what other medication are you taking meanwhile ?

Is this your first time coughing out blood ?

Please note that coughing out blood is a serious situation and it needs some check-ups. Do not worry. Sometimes viral infections can cause mucus with blood too.

If I're your treating doctor, i will do the investigations as follows:

Hemogram
CRP
Chest X Ray
PPD test
EKG

As per the results of these, the next step should be planned (eg. a CAT Scan of the lungs to exclude lung diseases).

So, in my opinion, it would be better to consult a specialist (Pulmonologist). They are relevant specialist in this regard and know very well the above tests and after examining you, will advice you further as per the results.

Feel free to ask me again in case you have any further questions.

Take care
Wish you a fast recovery

Thank you . I 'm thinking it's viral since the cough started a few days ago. I have a DRs appointment next Friday . I just wanted to know if its urgent that I get treated now.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again.

I would prefer you to have the appointment earlier.

Yes, there is an urgency in bloody sputum, but we correlate this with the other symptoms. If it is only one episode of this blood and the amount is small and if after some days the situation get better it can wait . If not, and especially if the amount of blood is larger and more frequent, you should go to ER as soon as possible.

So wait and see how will you feel after one or to days taking in consideration the above data. Be careful do not take medications that suppresses the cough reflect, they are contraindicated in this situation.

Feel free for asking me again.
Thank you
