Question: Hi, I have been diagnosed 6 months ago with primary progressive MS.My torso muscles are very week. I have recently suffered chronic low back pain and a trapped nerve in my lower back. Walking/sitting/moving are very painful. I wondered whether this would progress to my losing my ability to walk? I use a walking stick to aid balance but was still relatively XXXXXXX until this hit. Advice please.

Brief Answer:
Other possible conditions should be considered.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for using HCM.

I have read your query and understand your concerns.

MS can mimic other conditions, regarding to symptoms it may cause, so, every time that there is a clinical doubt about the correct diagnosis, further examinations are needed.

Liw back pain and compressed nerve(s) may be caused by other causes such herniated disc disease, arthritis of the spinal column etc., conditions that the symptoms they cause could be controlled and treated.

So, I advice you to discuss with your treating Doctor about getting tested for these conditions too, as possible causes of your symptoms.

Diagnostic steps include neurologic examination, MRI of the vertebral column and nerve conduction study of the lower extremities.

If these conditions are excluded as possible causes of your symptoms after the examinations, MS remains the culprit and good control of MS should improve the symptoms you describe too.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care.
