Question: I have been having heart jolts. I had been drinking a lot of alcohol for about a month but when the jolts started, I stopped the alcohol. The last drink was about a week ago but the jolts continue. Right now I'm having them. About one every 10 minutes. Am I in danger?

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

Regarding your concern, I would explain that your symptoms could be related to alcohol withdrawal symptoms.

But a cardiac arrhythmia can not be excluded either, considering the fact that these palpitations began while taking alcohol.

Do you have other symptoms like lightheadedness, dizziness or shortness of breath?

If you do not have any other similar symptoms, I think that the situation can wait.

I would also recommend taking Xanax0.25mg 1 or 2 tablets. If it helps relieve your symptoms it would be indicative or anxiety underlying your symptoms (as part of withdrawal syndrome).

If your troubles persist, even after taking Xanax, especially if associated to shortness of breath or dizziness, I would recommend going to the ER for a physical exam and some tests:

- a resting ECG
- complete blood count for anemia
- blood electrolytes for possible imbalance.

Hope you will find this answer helpful!

Feel free to ask me again whenever you need!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
