Alike schizophrenia bipolar disorder is another serious psychiatric disorder. It is often characterized by isolated episodes of mania and depression thus called bipolar. In other terms it is mood disorder which results in extreme of mood with dysfunctional implications.

When there is extreme state psychotic symptoms can also occur during episodes of depression as well as mania. The psychotic symptoms often include delusions (false belief), hallucinations ( perception without stimuli like hearing voices, abnormal and disorganized behavior among others.

The diagnosis is made on the basis of detailed history and mental state of patient.

In the era of functional imaging a plethora of abnormalities can be detected in bipolar disorder thus substantiating the existence of bipolar disorder. It is estimated that about 2-5 % of human population have some form of bipolar disorder.

Currently there are number of medicines available which help to treat it and most people live optimum life.
