HI,
I have had back pain for many years. I had a 3 stage cervical fusion 5 years ago. I really helped my neck and shoulder pain. I now have mid back pain . It feels like a deep muscle ache. The pain effects my quality of life. I take hydrocodone and don't get a lot of relief. I dream of a day where I am pain free. I am taking vitamin D and just started calcium. I had a hysterectomy at 40 and did not take hormore replacement. I have bone spurs thru my entire T spine. The wedging has happened in the last year after I had pneumonia and coughed to hard.
I also have a family history of back problems. My Mon is fused thru her entire spine , but she has better bone density. Can I do anything to stop more breaks ? Is there any surjury that can help me ? I have good insurance and the doctor that helped my mom is the best in the country for the T spine. He will see me, but I wonder if it is worth a very long drive .
Do you have any idea why I wound hurt in front of my rib cage also ? Sorry for so many questions, but the pain keeps me in the bed a lot and sitting is even painful .

Brief Answer:
You will also need calcitonin and alandronate

Detailed Answer:
Hello madam,
I have read your questions and I will try my best to help you .
1. I would suggest you to add Calcitonin nasal spray and Alandronate also. These medicines will help in bone strengthening.
2. If you can send me your x ray then I can tell if surgery can help you. There is a procedure called vertebroplasty , which helps in some patients. Please send me your x ray so I can decide if you are right candidate for this procedure.
3. It is better to see a specialist as he can offer you best advice.
4. I already mention that taking all above medicines and calcium rich diet like milk, egg and fish will improve your bone density. This will prevent any other fracture or rib pain.
5. Your rib pain can be due to weak bone.

I hope I have answered all your queries. Let me know if you want to ask any other question.

Thanks and take care.

Brief Answer:
Forteo will improve t score

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Forteo will help in improving score, though I am not sure if it really helps in bone pain. Still I would recommend you to take it.
Just keep a watch on side effects like vomiting, constipation and rarely bone cancer.
I hope your doctor must have advised you about all these side effects.
Also continue to take other drugs after discussing with your doctor. You said that your doctor wants to do surgery once your score improves, can you tell me which surgery?
Thanks.

Brief Answer:
wish you all the best

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Ok, I wish you all the best for this surgeries.

These are few thing which you may want to discuss with your surgeon.
1. Getting fusion in osteoporotic bone will be difficult.
2. Not sure if this fusion will relieve your pain completely.
So discuss these two points in detail with your doctor. Also discussed if vertebroplasty can be done. In this surgery, cement is injected through needle and it makes pain better. If this thing can be done it needs no anesthesia or bed rest. It would be best procedure in you.

Let your doctor decide the best option in your case. I hope this answer will help you. Let me know if you want to ask any other question.

Thanks.

can you do vertoplasty on bone that is already healed ?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Dr. Naveen Kumar Sharma (33 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
If it is healed then it should not be painful

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
You have asked a very good question. My answer is no, if bone is healed then vertebroplasty is not going to help. But if it is causing pain then it is not
healed and will be benefitted from vertebroplasty.
I hope you can give it a try before opting for surgery.
Thanks.
