Suggest Treatment For A Red Patch Behind Calf

default
Posted on Fri, 24 Jul 2015
Question: Hello,
My partner has a red patch that appeared on the back of his calf approximately 3 weeks ago. It hasn't cleared up and is very itchy. He has put Savlon antiseptic cream on it twice a day for 4 days but the patch hasn't shown any improvement. It is around 3/4 of an inch in size. Do you have any suggestions on what it could be?

Fungal Infection; Topical and Oral antifungals

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us

I have gone through your query and I have also reviewed the Image.

I can see a single, annular lesion with central clearing and red, raised, irregular margin. As you said, it is itchy!
I suggest a likely possibility of a fungal infection.
If I was the treating doctor I would have asked him to apply a topical antifungal e.g either Clotrimazole 1% cream Or Miconazole nitrate 2% cream, twice daily for 2-4 weeks.
Ideally, I would also have liked to add an Oral antifungal e.g once weekly Fluconazole tablet for 4 weeks.
An OTC oral antihistamine e.g cetrizine 10 mg once daily in evening will provide him symptomatic relief from itching.
