Suggest Treatment For UTI In An Elderly Patient

Question: My mother is 90 years old and in pretty good health. She takes no medicines, just vitamins and some supplements. She got a slight urinary tract infection (staphe) last week according to the doctor. She has been sleeping more since then but is not in any real pain, just says it feels a little funny in the bladder area. She has been taking Bactrim for six days, but doesn't seem much better. I called the doctor and asked about coming back today to do another urinanalysis, but instead the doctor said to try another antibiotic - Macrobib. However I looked at this website and that medicine sounds like it would be horrible for my mother to take based on the reviews. Do you have another suggestion for my mother ? Is there any thing natural to take?

Brief Answer:
You should do urine culture and sensitivity test before starting antibiotic

Detailed Answer:
Welcome to H.C.M.

I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.

This is nice to hear you that she in pretty good health.

Your mother already taken Bactrim and symptoms are still present then i would suggest you for Complete blood count and urine culture sensitivity test with the help of local doctor.

Urine culture and sensitivity test help us to find the right antibiotic to kill an infecting microorganism.

In elder its safe to use selected and most effective antibiotic.

I would also suggest for your mother to follow these steps-

1) Drink lots of water - 8 to 10 glasses of water daily.

2) Take Cranberries and blueberries because these contain substances that inhibit the binding of bacteria to bladder tissue.

3) Vitamin C 500 mg thrice a day.

4) Syrup Alkasol 5 ml thrice a day.

5) Review with reports or whenever you feel any problem.

Follow your Lab for urine culture report.

Hope this answers your question.

Please do not hesitate for any query.

I will be happy to answer your questions.
