Suggest Treatment For 2 Swollen Lumps On Chin

default
Posted on Wed, 29 Oct 2014
Question: Hi there,
I'm having some symptoms that im a little concerned about and would like to ask you.
For about the last month or so i noticed two lumps under my chin that were swollen, they don't hurt but i notice they are slightly larger than usual.
Also i feel as if i have something stuck in my throat and that i have to clear it all the time, it also feels like my nose to throat is blocked up with mucus. Also getting a scratchy sore throat at times.
Im also getting a pain in my ears sometimes, dry mouth on occasions and odd pains in my neck that i haven't felt before.
I went to the doctors who felt the lumps and said they were symmetrical so no cause for concern but no reason as to why they were enlarged.
They put me on tablets for acid reflux but this doesnt seem to have done anything.
Im just worried its something more than just reflux as i have these lumps and pain in my next and this sore throat all the time.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance

Brief Answer:
Ent consultation with interventions.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

I had gone through your question and understand your concerns.

I see similar cases amongst young people who visit my clinic.

As per your clinical details, lumps under chin ( lymph nodes) could be due to pharyngitis( sore throat) secondary to

1. sinusitis - post nasal drip (secretions flowing from sinus to throat causing sore throat).

2. Acid reflux( gastric contents coming back to throat from stomach.

Stasis of secretions at throat can cause ear infection through euchacian tube( tube connecting the ear and nose) leading to ear pain and ear blockage.

I suggest you to to consult ent surgeon and get detailed Ent examination, if necessary otoscopy, audiometry to rule out eusthacian tube block, laryngoscopy to know the damage of voice box due to acid reflux causing throat pain. Fine needle aspiration cytology of chin lymph nodes to know the cause.

I advise you to stop all the medications, and evaluate the cause for throat pain.

Hope this answers your question, if you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Wishing you good health.

Many thanks for your reply.

My main concern is the fact that my glands have been up for about a month now.

Is my doctor right that there is nothing sinister going on as they are symmetrical in size? They are not painful.

Why would it feel like i have a flap of skin in my throat and im having to constantly clear it, it feels dry too, could that have anything to do with it?

Many thanks

Brief Answer:
Needs interventions.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for your follow up.

Do not worry. Lymph node enlargement is due to infection and can be treated comfortably according to its cause.

As explained in my previous reply that the lump or the lymph node needs to be examined to know the cause of its enlargement. Frequent clearing of the throat as if some obstruction could be due to irritation of the throat because of sinusitis or gastric reflux.

So it would be better to see an ENT surgeon, go ahead for those investigations what I have already mentioned for definitive diagnosis and treatment.

Hope I have answered your question, in case of future questions or follow ups do not hesitate to ask me.

Wishing you good health.
