Question: I have been suffering from neuropothy in my feet caused by hypertension or diabietes! how do I choose compression socks! until recently( approx. july 2015 only in my right foot near the little toe and the top of that area! The left foot started showing symptoms in the same area (little toe top of the same area in left foot began showing exact same symptoms XXXXXXX or july and has progressed rapidly) aprox 5 months time! the other foot has been mild but continuous since approx. , -2008 -7 years) I lost 85 lbs over the past year and my diabietes is apparently no longer too much of a problem as I can eat anything and my blood sugar level is under 170ng/kg in less than 2 hrs. It used to stay between 235-300 until I took Lisinopril with hctz and amylidopine 10mg! 1 per day each! I have hep c, maintaining aprox the same viral load since 1999, it hasent worsened or gotten better since 1999 when I had a liver biopsy! kind of holding steady! I take synthroid for same time frame .125 mcg and my tsh stays near 0-1! my dr. has never once examined my feet visually in all these years! any ideas? Thanks in advance, XXXXXXX xxxxxx (MLT) since 2008 and Phleb, (ASCP) since 2007! I have no insurance

Read below.

Detailed Answer:
I read your question carefully and I am sorry about the many health issues that you have been having.

You have provided a good picture of what conditions you have but I wish you have said something more on the actual symptoms. You speak of them affecting your toe top but not in what exactly they are, is it pain, burning, tingling, numbness etc. I am asking trying to distinguish manifestations of neuropathy from manifestations of vessel disease or wounds also a frequent companion of diabetes.

Regarding the socks, it depends on what is their purpose. If you mean diabetic socks to protect from wound formation they should not be restrictive in order not to affect circulation. They should not have seams which rub against the skin in order to reduce risk of blistering. Toe box must be square not narrow. Should be warm to promote circulation. They should be well fitted and padded underneath to cushion the foot. The top should be nonbinding only slightly tighter. The material should be such as not to keep moisture, so cotton is not that suitable, acrylic or wool are more appropriate for that purpose.

As for other measures you seem to be taking all the right ones in order to slow the process as much as possible. Only thing that might be added in case of neuropathic pain would be medication like gabapentin to alleviate the symptoms.

I remain at your disposal for other questions.
