Suggest Remedy For Swelling And Pain In Buttocks After Getting Tetanus Shot

default
Posted on Tue, 11 Aug 2015
Question: Good evening doctor, I had a tetanus shot on my right butt cheek two days ago. Since then i started to have swelling on the spot where i took the tetanus shot. It was small initially, but it started to spread and its now almost palm size. Its somewhat tender but harder. I have pains too. I am worried if it will grow more and cause a big problem. I'd like your honest opinion. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Could be abscess formation.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,

Welcome to health care magic,

It is likely to be abscess formation at the buttocks following Tetanus IM injection as you said it was smaller in the size initially but grown to palm size within 2 days. Also it is painful, tender and harder.

But I will be able to say you exactly only after visual inspection at the site. So,it would be better if you can take a clinical picture and upload on the right side of query page,so that i can guide you better.

Generally this kind of large abscess needs incision and drainage treatment followed by oral antibiotics,anti-inflammatory and analgesics with other supportive treatment.

Kindly get back to me with the picture.

Thank you for your reply. I have uploaded the picture of the affected area. I live alone so i did the best i could to take the photo. If this is not proper then i shall try and give a better shot again. Also i forgot to mention, i have mild fever.

Brief Answer:
It seems to be having cellulitis turning to abscess.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,

Thanks for the picture.

It seems to be having cellulitis turning to abscess as a result of that injection (which could be septic).Your mild fever could be the reason of this septic abscess.

You can feel the swelling by back of your hand and it will be warm to touch that also suggests some sort of infection.

You can take ibuprofen with antipyretic combination ( tab.combiflam available over the counter) with antacid (pantoprazole 40 mg).

But as I said earlier this kind of large abscess needs incision and drainage (I&D) under local anaesthesia for which you should see surgeon.

And it is a day care procedure which will be followed by oral antibiotics,anti-inflammatory and analgesics with other supportive treatment.

Here,do not start antibiotic without consulting surgeon as it may lead to antibioma formation.

Hope this will help you.
