Suggest Remedy For Shortness Of Breath And Chest Pain

Question: HI am a 66 year old male that stopped smoking one pack a day at age 37 after 20 years. I have stopped for 28-29 years but still worry some.

I have a very mild dry tickly cough...I probably cough lightly 8-12 times per day and night. No other symptoms. I could play tennis for three hours. I have no shortness of breath, no weight loss, no chest pain, and no blood in spit or cough up.

I do suffer from long term allergies and I am guessing it's Spring and Fall allergies causing this from post nasal drip. I just started Allegra and Flonase nose spray. Do you think I have the likely issue noted? Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Cough is caused by allergic reaction.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Since you stopped smoking and have no shortness of breath and weight loss and no blood in spit i do not think you need to worry.

Your mild dry tickly cough is due to allergy and i would advise you to take syrup mits codeine linctus 3 tsf twice daily after food for 2 weeks.

I would also advise you to do a chest X ray PA view.

Thank you Dr. For your professional response. If the cough is due to cancer does the patient normally spit up phlegm or blood?

And is your suggestion for an XRay more for self assurance than need?

Brief Answer:
Cancer would lead to blood in spit

Detailed Answer:
Hi

If the cough was due to lung cancer then there would be blood in cough.

Also there would be significant weight loss.

You must do an x ray chest to rule out any lung infection causing the cough.

If you have no more clarifications then please rate the answer and close the thread.
