Suggest Remedy For Persistent Heart Palpitations In A Person With Anxiety

default
Posted on Thu, 3 Dec 2015
Question: I am wondering if I am showing signs of a heart attack. I am a 31 yr old semi-healthy female. I have ulcerative colitis and anxiety. Last week I had a very bad flare up with my UC and was hospitalized on Thursday 11-5-15. The past 4 days I have had heart palpitations, and my left arm has been sore. The palpitations probably occur 10 times a day. I have already been to the ER twice last week and am trying not to have to go back. Am hoping you can help. Thank you.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

I understand your concern and would explain that it is important to perform some tests to exclude possible cardiac arrhythmia or ischemia.

Although you are too young to suffer a cardiac disorder, it can not be excluded.

Anxiety could also mimic this clinical situation.

What cardiac tests have you performed in the ER?

Could you please upload the reports?

I recommend consulting with the GP for a careful physical examination and some tests:

- ECG,cardiac ultrasound to examine your cardiac function
- blood lab tests ( complete blood count, blood electrolytes, cardiac enzymes)

An ambulatory 24-48 hours ECG monitoring for possible cardiac arrhythmias would be needed.

If all the above tests result normal the main cause of your symptoms would be just anxiety.

Hope to have been helpful!

Feel free to ask any other questions whenever you need!

Greetings!

Dr. Iliri
