Question: I have developed a very bad eczema since XXXXXXX that traveled all over my body. I notice that when I eat anything that remotely turns to sugar I itch terribly and the rash rages. I was defined pre diabetic. Should I be concerned?

I asked a question and have been waiting for an answer. Im concerned about eczema that is restricting my diet and is causing me to be faint and achey the last week. If I eat anything that converts to sugar the itch all over my body becomes exacerbated Im concerned and am not sure what to do.
I have had the rash for 10 months. I am restricted to some veggies, because on Coumadin. Salad, salmon, chicken, grass fed beef and sunflower seeds on occasion.

Brief Answer:
Possible Food allergy a/w rash.

Detailed Answer:
Hello, Madam.

I understand your concern.

You possibly seem to have Food borne allergy, which is precipitating the rash.

The only proven medication therapy against a food allergy is strict elimination of the offending food allergen from the diet and avoidance of any contact with the food by ingestion, skin contact, inhalation, or injection.

There are currently no curative therapies for food allergy.

But a short course of antihistamines will help.

I generally recommend my patients oral tablets of Cetirizine. Please check with your physician if shares my view and if can prescribe them to you.

Consultation with a board-certified allergist/immunologist should be considered when food allergy is suspected or confirmed.

Consultation with a nutritionist or nutrition service is invaluable in the overall management of food allergies. The elimination diet can be reviewed and appropriate substitutions can be recommended. Dietary deficiencies can be anticipated and prevented.

Post your further queries if any.
Thank you.

Thank you for your answer to my question. Yes I would concur that its SUGAR that is the culprit. That said.....any sugar that finds its way into my diet causes a terrible outbreak of this horrible itching and maddening rash. Are you of the opinion that there is any way to desensitize the body so that eventually I can eat healthy forms of sugar, such as carrots and fruits?

Brief Answer:
Immunotherapy for food allergy is still under trials.

Detailed Answer:
Hello, Madam.

I understand your concern.

Immunotherapy and desensitization are under the way.

Studies are under way to determine if oral, sublingual, or epicutaneous immunotherapy is safe and effective for food allergies, with some promising results.

Additional studies are needed to define the safety profile and side effects (short term and long term) and to determine whether treatment affects resolution of the allergy (tolerance without repeated dosing of the allergen) or desensitization (an increased threshold while undergoing dosing).

A strategy using anti-IgE antibodies (omalizumab) in conjunction with oral immunotherapy is also under investigations as it may allow faster up-dosing with fewer side effects.

You may please check with your physician/allergist/immunotherapist with regards to recent updates in the treatment of food allergy.

Post your further queries if any.

Thank you.
