Question: threw my hip ( or place between leg and groin on the outer side )out dancing. Instantly was hot. I think it popped back in but want to keep going this weekend at workshop. Have iced and stretched and now what should I do? Yes, painful to walk normally. need to favor leg and walk with a limp. Haven't had an injury before so this is new. Promise I won't dance anymore but any other stretches --suggestions to make sure I give maximum support?

hi,

thanks for your question.

can you tell me more about your symptoms?

where exactly is your pain, is it in your groin or on the outside of your hip. does it hurt when you press in this area?

how long ago did hurt it? what exactly were you doing when you felt the pop? have you had symptoms in your hip before?

thanks

Dr XXXXXXX

I'm at a seminar and presenter had us dancing music on the breaks. This was 70s music. So a little XXXXXXX Travolta action. So I heard it pop and then felt immediate heat. So basically I was moving my hips and arms to the music.

It's been 6 hours. I've done hot and cold and hot and cold. Plus Advil to assist with the swelling. The pain is front and outside the radius of the hip and leg. injury on my left side. I'm right side dominant. Walking is a bit painful so I walk with my foot pointed at an outside angle to put less pressure on the front and side.

I've never had hip problems. I do work that requires sitting at the computer. I do weekly Pilates and wAlk at least 6 days a week. I'm 5 8 @ @190 pounds. Medium frame body type.

Really looking for any short term solutions as i'm away for home and want to continue the seminar until I return home next week..

Thank you. Appreciate your knowledgeable and direction.

Brief Answer:
Quadriceps tear

Detailed Answer:
hi,

thanks for the information.

based on what you are reporting it sounds as though you may have a quadriceps muscle strain.

A quadriceps strain involves a partial or complete tear of the one of those four muscles or their tendons when they're stretched beyond their normal limits.

How Strained Quadriceps Happens

Quadriceps muscles are most often strained when an athlete is trying to accelerate. The quadriceps muscles are placed under more force than they can withstand, and the muscle fibers, tendons, or both begin to tear away from the bone. When the muscles are fatigued, overused, or not adequately warmed up, they're more susceptible to strain. An imbalance between weak quadriceps and stronger hamstrings can also cause the injury, a condition that is common among runners. Tight quads can also cause the same problem.

the treatment of a quads strain is as follows.

Rest, and avoid activities that require lower leg strength and power.
Apply ice or cold packs for 15-20 minutes, three to four times a day for the first 48-72 hours.
Apply moist heat after the first 48-72 hours for 15-20 minutes, three to four times a day.
Use an elastic wrap or bandage around the area to minimize swelling.
Use a pillow or cushion to elevate the affected leg as much as possible during the day and while sleeping at night.
Aspirin, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and naproxen may relieve pain.

I hope this answers your question

best wishes
