Suggest Remedy For Joints Pain And Pain Under The Left Armpit

Posted on Tue, 28 Jul 2015
Question: I am 61, healthy, work on an alpaca farm. 2 nights ago awakened throughout the night every 2 hours with chills, next day significant malaise. By noon, improvement. Some joint pain and pain under my left armpit. There are no lymph nodes there that seem present. Today I noticed the entire left breast lower half (3 o'clock to 9 o'clock) is red. No pain. Left armpit a little sore but much better. No chills or any other symptoms. Is this cellulitis? Maybe an insect bite ( although nothing visible on my breast, no punctum) thank you for your help.

Brief Answer:
Could be an insect bite leading to Cellulitis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
It would most likely be a insect bite leading to cellulitis with mild infection. It could also be Mondors disease which is an infection of the superficial veins of the chest.
Do not worry.
Either way the treatment would be to take a course of antibiotics and anti inflammatory medicines. I usually advice cefuroxime (antibiotic) twice a day and ibuprofen also twice to thrice a day. Warm compresses should be applied to the affected area. You should feel better in 2 to 3 days. If not then you should get examined by a Physician or a Surgeon for further management or you could send us a photo of the involved area.

Do let me know if I can be of further help.

Take care.

Thank you. There are small bumps, itchy, under the affected breast and some bumps between both breasts. Could this be a type of infection that started in the skin fold? With temperatures in the 90s, I often work in a sweat drenched shirt literally for up to 6 hours. If that caused it, would a topical alone work like clotrimazole? It doesn't look as red today, and I am on my last day of a Medrol dose pack for an unrelated back condition. Trying to avoid oral antibiotics if possible since I am in the sun all day. Thank you for your help.

Brief Answer:
Please see a Dermatologist or send us a Photo.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
It would be best to show to a Skin Specialist or Dermatologist before embarking upon any treatment. But if that is not possible or difficult then you can send us a photograph of the bumps or area affected so we can see and make a better informed advice.
What medicines to take and what topical agents to be advised can be told then only.
It could very well be infection and I would advice to keep the area absolutely clean and dry at all times. You can wash it regularly with soap and water and dab it dry immediately with a towel.
Hope I have been helpful. But best would be if we are able to see the lesion or you can show it to a Dermatologist.
Take care,
