Posted on Mon, 23 Mar 2015
Question: I have had what I thought was a pulled muscle on my right side for 6 days. It radiates fro front to back just under the ribcage. My doctor says no kidney problems. But in the last 2days a rash has developed in the same area . Its itchy but the pain is still there. like a pulled muscle. Spasms also. Tylenol just barely makes the pain go away. Is this shingles? What do I take? Thanks. YYYY@YYYY

Brief Answer:
It is most likely shingles.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query

I'm Dr Sudhir Kumar

I have gone through your query and understand your concern. You have most probably have got shingles. Tylenon makes pain go away so you can continue to take it. You can also take ibuprofen. Medications that contain narcotics, such as codeine can be taken for pain relief if pain is more. Numbing agents, such as lidocaine, delivered via a cream, gel, spray or skin patch can reduce pain.
An injection including corticosteroids and local anesthetics if pain is severe.
Shingles generally lasts between two and six weeks. Most people get shingles only once. There is no cure for shingles i.e. it takes its own course to resolve but prompt treatment with prescription antiviral drugs can speed healing and reduce your risk of complications. These medications include:
Acyclovir (Zovirax)
Valacyclovir (Valtrex)
Famciclovir (Famvir)
You can discuss with your doctor about it.

Hope your query get answered. If you have any clarification then I will be happy to help you.

Wishing you a good health.
Take care.
