Suggest Remedy For Hypothyroidism

Posted on Thu, 26 Nov 2015
Question: Hello Dr,
I am 24 years old lady diagnosed with hypothyroidism in the year 2011 & I was prescribed to start Eltroxin 50mg. I used to take this tablet till September 2015. I stopped after Sept because I wanted to check my thyroid levels & consult a Dr. I delivered a girl baby on July 8th 2015(Normal delivery). I have been breast feeding now. I got a lab test done on 10/10/2015. Please note that I had not taken the tablet on the day the test was done. My test results follows:

Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (Chemilumnescene) - <0.015mcIU/ml(Observed values)

Please advise further..

Brief Answer:
Stop medications as of now, repeat test after 2 weeks

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Welcome to HCM. I have gone through the question and understand your concerns

Your tests are showing low TSH. So you are either over replaced with Eltroxin or your thyroid is producing excess thyroid hormones now.

There is a condition called post partum thyroiditis, in which your thyroid gland is damaged and hormones in thyroid gland are released to blood causing low TSH and high T4. This condition will proceed to hypothyroidism (high TSH) in 2-3 months time.

My suggestions for you

1. Stop Eltroxin now
2. Do Free T4, free T3,TSH and Anti TPO antibodies after 2 weeks
3. If TSH still low do not restart Eltroxin and retest after 2 months
4. Start medications after 2 months based on TFT values

Hope I have answered your question.
If you need any further clarifications please feel free to ask me.

Thanks a lot for the kind response.. Is there any other information that I need to share with you as I do not have any historical reports. Since last week, I feel little tired & giddy when I sit sometimes..

Is it ok to wait for 2 months without medicines? Is this a serious concern that I need to worry about? What are your dietary suggestions to keep my thyroid levels under control..Would you suggest me to visit an endocrinologist personally to be examined ?

Thanks in advance!!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Welcome back. No need to worry. These type of fluctuations in thyroid functions are common post delivery.

Answers to your questions:

1. You can stop the medication for 2 weeks and then retest. There won't be any problem with stopping medicine for 2 weeks. If normal we usually retest after 45-60 days.

2. No dietary modifications needed for your thyroid disease.

3. It is always better to consult an endocrinologist and get yourself examined.
