Question: Hi, I am 68 years old and have d1abites type 2. since I have been this type2. I used glucophage (1000 morning, 1000 at bed time). my blood sugar was fluctuating between 150 to 2200. I was suffering numbing in my feet and hands. I was asked by the doctor to switch to galvus-met 50/1000 and stayed on that for awhile. my psychtist asked me to take 10mg zeprixa one week ago, since that time my blood suger was raised to 250-300. I am happy with zeprexa because it releif ton of anxiety and depression which I was suffering from 30 years although I tried many anti depression and anxiety medicines which all failed. I do not to change the Zibrexa so what can I do ?

Brief Answer:
You may try Zyprexa at a low dose for few weeks

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to HCM
Thanks for asking your query.
It is a wise decision to ask your health related query here.

Zyprexa (Olanzapine) is an antipsychotic medicine of SDA group. It is used in psychosis like Schizophrenia and Mood disorders like depression, mania and bipolar illness. At low dose it may exert anxiolytic property as well. This drug may cause deranged blood sugar, weight gain and increased cholesterol level.

Since you are diabetic and you already had deranged blood sugar after using this drug, it is not suitable for you in long run.

On the other hand, because you could find many drugs ineffective in treating your anxiety, you may continue this medicine in a low dose. At low dose it may control anxiety and also as an adjunct in curing depression.

There are safer antidepressants that may also act as anxiolytic agent. Can you please tell me what all psychiatric medicines have you tried, so that I can suggest you a better alternative.

You may try low dose 2.5 mg of Zyprexa along with 10 mg of Escitalopram (an SSRI) per day and monitor your blood sugar regularly. This is a fairly good combination to take care of anxiety and depression.

Hope this works for you.

All the best.
